ARTIST STATEMENT
Existence does not arise on its own.
It emerges, almost by chance,
within an infinite web of relationships.
Everything in this world exists as part of an ongoing flow of interconnected threads.
My practice is an attempt to touch this fragile continuity,
and to give it form through thread and stitching.
Each stitch traces the invisible flow of relations,
while quietly holding a sense of continuity that seems to be slipping away in our fragmented world.
Layers of fabric accumulate as time,
and the rhythm of thread reveals an unseen movement that runs through all things.
The figures that appear in my work are not fixed individuals,
but presences that emerge temporarily within a field of relations.
Within them, there is a quiet light—something that does not disappear,
even in uncertainty.
Thread does not bind; it gently reveals what is already connected.
Through the act of stitching,
I engage with a world that is already beginning to unravel.
And yet,
within that fragility,
I continue to give form to a quiet sense of prayer and
gratitude—for the way existence is sustained through relation.
I believe that these small accumulations of gesture can restore, however subtly,
our sense of connection in the world.
存在は、単独では生まれない。
それは無数の関係の中で、偶然のように立ち現れている。
この世のすべては、絶えず流れ続ける「縁」の重なりの中にある。
私の制作は、その不確かな連なりに触れようとする試みである。
しかし同時にそれは、分断と孤立へと向かう現代に対して、
もうひとつの世界の見方を提示する行為でもある。
私たちがひとつの存在として捉えるものは、
固定された実体ではなく、無数の関係の中で一時的に結ばれた状態にすぎない。
ミシンで刻まれる一針一針は、目に見えない関係の流れをなぞりながら、
失われつつある「生命の連続性」を呼び戻そうとする行為である。
布の重なりは時間の堆積となり、糸のリズムは万物を貫く見えない流れを映し出す。
作品に現れる像は、個としての存在ではなく、関係の中でかろうじて立ち現れている「状態」である。
その「祈りの肖像」は、個人を超え、関係の中で生かされている存在そのものの象徴として現れる。
糸は、繋ぐためのものではない。すでにそこに在る関係を、可視化するための痕跡である。
一針一針は、存在の脆さと持続を同時に内包しながら、ほどけていく世界の構造を静かに示している。
縫うという行為を通して、私は、崩れはじめている世界の在り方に触れながら、
それでもなお、存在が関係の中で保たれているという事実を提示し続けている。
それは、人と人、世界と世界のあいだに、再び「つながりの感覚」を取り戻すための試みである。
この小さな行為の連なりは、失われつつある世界の見方を 静かに更新するものである。
MISSION
My practice reconsiders existence not as an independent entity,
but as something that emerges temporarily within relations.
Through the repetitive act of machine stitching,
I give form to invisible connections,
quietly proposing a sense of continuity in an increasingly fragmented world.
私の制作は、存在を独立したものとしてではなく、
関係の中で一時的に立ち現れるものとして捉え直す試みである。
ミシン刺繍という反復的な行為を通して、
目に見えない関係性をかたちとして現し、分断と孤立が進む現代において、
失われつつある「つながりの感覚」を静かに提示する。
BIOGRAPHY / COLLECTIONS
Kayo Aiba
Born in Aichi, Japan. After graduating from Nagoya University of Arts, Aiba moved to New York, where her artistic foundation was shaped through exposure to contemporary art and performance.
In 2003, at her first solo exhibition in New York, her work was acquired by Ronald Lauder, founder of Neue Galerie and renowned art collector. This marked a pivotal moment, positioning her practice within an international context.
Her work has since been supported by collectors including filmmaker Takeshi Kitano, and continues to evolve through a distinct approach to portraiture.
Working with machine embroidery, Aiba builds layered surfaces of fabric and thread, visualizing the accumulation of time and relationships. Rooted in the Zen concept of dependent origination, her practice reconsiders existence as something that emerges through relation.
Her work can be understood as a response to an increasingly fragmented world, proposing a renewed awareness of continuity and interconnectedness.

アイバ カヨ
愛知県生まれ。名古屋芸術大学卒業後、ニューヨークに渡り、現代美術と身体表現に触れる中で芸術的基盤を形成する。
2003年、ニューヨークでの初個展において、Neue Galerie創設者であり美術コレクターであるロナルド・ローダーにより作品が所蔵される。この出来事を契機に、彼女の制作は国際的な文脈の中で位置づけられることとなる。
以降、映画監督・北野武をはじめとするコレクターに支持され、肖像表現を軸に独自の展開を続ける。
ミシン刺繍という手法を用い、布と糸を幾層にも重ねることで、時間と関係性の蓄積を可視化する表現を確立。現在は、禅の思想である「因縁生起」を背景に、存在を関係の中で立ち現れる現象として捉え直す試みを行っている。
その作品は、分断が進む現代において、存在の連続性と関係性を再提示するものとして位置づけられる。
