Kayo Aiba: Translating the Invisible Flow of Interconnectedness

Born in Aichi and a graduate of Nagoya University of the Arts, Kayo Aiba’s artistic trajectory was ignited during her time in New York. Inspired by the "energy within silence" of ballet, she developed a singular technique using fabric, thread, and a sewing machine to encapsulate the consciousness that continues to flow even in stillness.

Aiba’s mission is to manifest the Eastern philosophy of "In-nen Sho-ki" (Dependent Origination). In her work, each stitch is a ritualistic act of mending the severed connections of the modern world, making visible the "En" (karmic ties) that bind all existence. Her "Strata of Life" represents the accumulation of time, while the pulse of her thread captures the temperature of life itself.

Her profound spirituality has garnered international acclaim. In 2003, her work was acquired by Ronald S. Lauder, founder of the Neue Galerie and former curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her collectors also include the visionary filmmaker Takeshi Kitano.

Through the motif of Woman as a symbol of life's lineage, Aiba seeks to restore a sense of profound interconnectedness within the human soul. Her work is a "Chain of Prayer," offering a once-in-a-lifetime encounter that resonates with warmth, dignity, and the eternal echo of hope.
